The ocean is wide, beautiful, mysterious, refreshing, and always ready for an extended stay. When you're vacationing near the coast, or considering making such a lifestyle a component of your primary residence, you're going to want to spend some time in the ocean. A great way to have fun and get exercise involves navigating the waters around you. Ocean and flat water kayaking are very popular ways to get out and do this, while providing versatility for a change of scenery from day to day.
Typically, an ocean kayak is longer than a white-water kayak. This makes them move more swiftly. They're not quite so maneuverable, but they do cut right through the water, and allow you to explore the coast intimately. There are a number of different varieties, as well! Believe it or not, some people actually take long journeys via sea kayak. There are boats of this kind that can accommodate three kayaking athletes and their gear! Certainly this isn't going to be the sort of kayaking most vacationers will try, but it's nice to know how well-built these vessels can be. They're quite sturdy and feature a design that is proven by time--it's been used by the Inuit and Eskimo peoples since at least the 1800's.
Working Up To The Sea
Learning to kayak on an inland body of water first is an easier approach, but you may not have access to one depending on your location. What you may want to do in this case is practice getting in and out of the kayak on dry land, or plan your first outing for a time when the sea is exceptionally calm. Granted, this isn't strictly necessary, but especially for a family outing you want everyone prepared. It all depends on your location. If you're on the Gulf Coast, for example, you're likely not going to see the same kind of waves as you will on the southern coasts of Florida, or up the Eastern Seaboard. Either way, with a kayak under you, you can navigate the many mainland waters of the region and learn the ins and outs of this special kind of nautical navigation.
Opportunities For All Ages
Whether young or old, there's a lot that can be done with these versatile boats. These vessels offer a high degree of comfort and mobility atop the water. Especially for family outings, renting a few kayaks and hitting the cool lagoons outside your beach house can be downright ideal. Kayaking is increasingly popular among younger people. If you're considering buying one for your home, you might rent one first while on vacation and see what it's really all about.
Family Adventure
Many inland lakes have tiny little islands in their midst that require you either swim out or take a boat to reach them. With a Kayak, you can explore such little islands on your own schedule and without the hassle of arranging a larger boat, or worrying about someone in your group getting tired during an open water swim. A family with a few young ones can have a real adventure in a way that is safe if done properly, and certain to be enjoyable for everyone. Plus, you'll get some exercise while you're at it! Ocean and flat water kayaking represent a great way to get kids interested in physical activity outdoors that they'll actually think is a fun adventure! Just ensure to follow basic kayaking safety rules, and watch out for one another. And while kayaking is a fine family activity for any vacation, or just a weekend at the beach house, it's also an excellent choice for a couple - renting a 2 person kayak is a great way to spend some quality time together while having fun in the outdoors.
